Originally launched in the 1990s, the Atom is now an established motoring icon, turning heads both for its looks and the fact it is as exhilarating a car as you could wish to drive. The DB11 succeeds the DB9 as Aston Martin’s flagship V12 GT, taking on cars like the Mercedes-AMG S65 Coupe, Bentley GTC and Ferrari F12. Aston’s DB lineage, named after one-time owner David Brown, stretches right back to 1950 and includes the iconic DB5 of Goldfinger fame. But the DB11 is the first all-new one since 2003. And if you’re wondering what happened to DB10, that was reserved for a special re-bodied V8 Vantage used in 2015’s Bond film, Spectre.

 

At 610 horsepower, this naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 is the most powerful engine ever put into production by Audi. It revs 20 percent quicker than its predecessor, spinning from idle to its 8500-rpm redline in 0.66 second. The pedestal it’s bolted to, a V10 Plus, blitzes to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and wails a stirring soprano aria in the process.

But what the R8 yields in flash, it makes up for in cohesive design. The angular body is one of the most futuristic shapes ever to roll off a production line. While some supercars can be confused as “some new Ferrari or Lamborghini,” the R8 is almost immediately recognized as an Audi. That’s because Audi’s latest models are all characterized by piercing LED headlights and taillights, ornate wheel designs, and angular bodies.

There’s an overwhelming sense of Britishness about the second-generation Bentley Continental GT coupe, from the imposing-yet-svelte styling to an interior swathed with lashings of leather and charm. It’s luxurious but in a nevertheless slightly quaint manner. Such is the Bentley’s combination of spaciousness (relatively speaking), performance and refinement, it has few direct rivals.

Welcome to the future; this is the new BMW i8 Roadster, a hybrid electric two-door 2+2 sports car the likes of which the world hasn’t seen before. Despite the eco-conscious demeanour, the i8 develops 369bhp and 570Nm of torque, and can sprint from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds thanks to its sophisticated four-wheel drive chassis and lightweight carbon-fibre construction. Those numbers pit the BMW very much up against the Porsche 911 and Audi R8.

Prior to the MP12-C, McLaren had only built one road car by themselves and it's a car that many reckoned to be the greatest of all time, the iconic F1. How do you even begin to follow that? The answer was to do something different. Instead of building an F1 replacement, McLaren lowered its sights a little and instead targeted the supercar heartland and the MP4-12C was born.

Eleanor, the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 from the film Gone in Sixty Seconds - widely recognised as one of Hollywood's most iconic film cars of the 21st century. With all the cars in the film referred to as female names to hide their identities from the police, Eleanor was described as the main character's 'unicorn' — the one he failed to steal on a number of occasions. Bumblebee is a fictional character from the Transformers franchise. In most incarnations, Bumblebee is a small, yellow (with black stripes) Autobot with most of his alternative vehicle modes inspired by several generations of the Chevrolet Camaro/Pontiac Firebird muscle cars (with the live-action film versions being real Camaros: the original vehicle mode was based on a Volkswagen Beetle).

A race car in the original action figure line from Hasbro, Barricade was altered to become a police car in 2007's live action film Transformers from director Michael Bay. His alternate form of a Saleen-Modified Ford Mustang Police Cruiser, makes him similar in appearance to the Autobot Prowl.

The General Lee is the name given to a 1969 Dodge Charger driven in the television series The Dukes of Hazzard by the Duke boys, Bo and Luke, along with cousins Coy and Vance. The Dukes of Hazzard ran 147 episodes over 7 seasons and over 300 of 1969 Chargers were destroyed in filming.

KITT was a customized 1982 Pontiac Trans-Am sports model, that cost US$100,000 to build. KITT was an advanced artificially intelligent, self-aware and nearly indestructible car. KITT stood for Knight Industries Two Thousand.

The 1983 black and metallic gray GMC Vandura van used by the A-Team, with its characteristic red stripe, black and red turbine mag wheels, and rooftop spoiler, has become an enduring pop culture icon. It was that good General Motors made virtually the same van for 25 years. 

 

Many Skylines were used for the film, but only six actual Skylines were real - the others, we’re reliably informed, were all stunt cars fitted on VW Beetle chassis’ with plastic bodies. Of the six genuine Skylines used, three of them were sold as parts cars, two were destroyed and one was saved for potential sequels.

There were four working Trans Ams on the production of the film and none survived the brutal punishment delivered by stunt men who sent the cars flying through the air and crashing into stuff. There was, however, one "promotion" car that traveled worldwide to promote the movie, and the current owner of this promo car actually bought it off Burt Reynolds for $450,000 last year and found the engine hadn't been started since 1985!

The 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 is a classic, red-blooded, American muscle car. While the Mustang line was only three years old in 1967, this didn’t stop the legendary Carroll Shelby from injecting a healthy dose of his ingenuity into the redesigned, 1967 model. Impressive acceleration, great looks, amazing street presence, and glorious V-8 sounds were all standard equipment.

1993 Toyota Supra that starred in the original The Fast And The Furious from 2001. It was built by movie prop veteran Eddie Paul from The Shark Shop in El Segundo, California, and was featured throughout the movie, including in the final race scene between O’Connor and Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto who was in a 1970 Dodge Charger.

Hardcore 493bhp GT3 RS represents a new level for the Porsche 911 - faint hearts need not apply. Grip is colossal, and you can, once you get brave, play with the balance - small, carefully measured adjustments only though, please. It takes time to fully appreciate, but like all good cars, it’s one that communicates brilliantly, and leaves you wanting more, makes you want to learn and improve. Doesn’t suffer fools, though.

Probably the most iconic sports car ever made, the Porsche 911 has set class standards for handling and performance for years.  The rear-engined layout that made early 911s so tricky to handle has been retained, but it’s been refined over the generations so the car now has the stability to match its jaw-dropping performance.
